15 years of mobile website construction

At the beginning of the 21st century, a mobile phone craze gradually emerged in China. In 2008, Apple released the first generation iPhone, ushering in the era of smartphones. With the development of 3G networks, the speed of mobile networks has significantly increased, allowing users to browse images and videos, and more and more excellent mobile websites and applications have emerged. According to traffic statistics, over the past 15 years, the proportion of mobile phone visits has gradually surpassed that of computers. Currently, its proportion has reached as high as 60% or even 80%. In order to adapt to the trend of the times, our website also has to consider transformation issues
Just like a enterprise, transforming a website is not an easy task. Firstly, due to my basic lack of understanding of IT technology, I am an outsider. Secondly, after years of construction, our website is quite rich in content, with a total of over 4000 pages in both Chinese and English. The workload of transformation is enormous. For a personal public welfare website, there is indeed a sense of unbearable burden
However, personal websites also have their own characteristics: firstly, they do not seek fame and fortune, and do not have any burdens; Secondly, there is no shortage of time, and some things can be done slowly. From 2008 to 2023, after 15 years of struggling progress, our website has finally completed the transformation work, fulfilling my personal wish as a webmaster and opening a convenient door for enthusiasts
Looking back at these 15 years, our transformation history can be divided into three important time points:

1. 2008

Start establishing a WAP based mobile website. This period of history has been recorded in a WAP column (computer version, Chinese), with a total of 8 pages. The characteristic of this stage was that it was limited to the 2G network conditions at that time, and could only publish some text, images, low bit rate music, and so on. This stage can only be said to be an experiential stage, and looking back now, it is somewhat similar to a child, just starting. Interested friends can browse on their own, and I won't go into detail here

2. 2016

With the rise of 3G networks and the widespread use of mobile phones, the traffic to our website has sharply decreased from 2014 to almost two-thirds in 2016. Despite taking many measures, it is still unable to resist this major trend. The reason is very simple. People have already spent most of their time and energy on their phones, and the number of people using computers has significantly decreased. The situation is pressing. In order to survive and develop the website, although I am in my old years, I have had to prioritize the construction of a mobile website. Therefore, I spent more than two years buying books, going to Baidu (Chinese searching engine), finding software, and conducting experiments. It is not an exaggeration to say that it has gone through countless hardships. I have recorded this experience on this webpage (mobile version). Interested friends can browse on their own. At this stage, the main harvest are:

2-1 Among numerous mobile website building modes, the HTML5 format for mobile version has been determined
2-2 Putting aside the website editing software DREAMWERVER version 4.0 that has been in use for many years, I began to learn how to use DREAMWERVER CS6 and use of CSS formats
2-3 Firstly, a "Philatelic Collection Transfer" website was established in the form of an independent mobile version. Afterwards, from 2017 to 2020, using the knowledge learned from practice, an attempt was made to transform some sections of the main website into a mobile version

3. 2023

The biggest problem after successful experiments on representative web pages from 2020 to 2022 is the enormous workload of website renovation. Considering that half of the current 4000 web pages on the entire website have 2000 pages, even if 4 new mobile web pages are created every day, it will take 500 working days. Faced with such a huge workload, the author cannot find a better way at that time. Entering 2020, the author's energy was mostly spent on the editing work of the "Ennio Morricne Fans Handbook" Volume 2, Volume 3, and "Ennio Morricone Rare Volume". The revision work has to be temporarily put on hold

。Entering the second half of 2023. The author finally freed himself from the extensive editing work of the "Handbook" and "Rare Volume" and had some time to consider other issues. Although my eyes underwent cataract removal surgery and my visual impairment has recovered, my physical and mental strength have declined significantly, and the issue of website succession is also under consideration. However, the issue of this mobile version has been lingering in my mind and cannot be receded. My final idea is to solve this problem on my own, leaving behind a complete, up-to-date, sustainable, and easy to maintain and develop website for future generations. Is there a simpler and more feasible way to deal with such a huge workload? The workload of this revision is significant, as each webpage needs to be copied item by item from the old webpage's text, images, audio, video links, etc. into a new HTML5 format webpage in the DREAMWERVER webpage editor, taking into account the characteristics of the mobile version, the layout of some images needs to be modified. This is a very troublesome matter

While hesitating and thinking, I suddenly remembered that in recent years of practical work, I found that the DREAMWERVER-CS6 version of the web page editor seemed to have a lot of improvements in functionality, unlike the previous version 4.0, which was relatively closed. It seems that the CS6 editor and files in WORD, EMAIL, WEB and other formats can copy each other. So can I copy the entire web page on the Internet? "Practice is the criterion for testing truth." This is the truth I believe most. So, I opened a page A of my website on my computer, except for its head and tail. I used the left button of the mouse to make the entire page blue, then right-clicked "Copy", and then opened a page of the CS6 editor. Right-click the blank web page B with spaces inserted and "Paste", and a miracle occurs. In the blink of an eye, the content of web page A has been completely pasted to web page B. I saved it and uploaded it to my web space via FTP, then opened it on my computer, and a webpage similar to webpage A appeared in front of me. I carefully opened this webpage on my mobile phone and checked its text, pictures, audio, and video links. It was amazing, it worked! All content is intact, all links are valid, nothing bad. Ah I finally found a way out. This speed is 10 times faster than the old method, and a year's workload can now be completed in about one month. This is nothing less than a new liberation for an elderly person like me, and I am really happy!

In addition to being happy, I naturally need to be more careful to do some research: the first question is, where do its images come from? Friends who have used DW software know that there is a dedicated folder for website images, which are uploaded to the website space along with the webpage. This copied webpage does not require this step at all, where is its image source? Upon closer observation, it was discovered that all of its images were from the copied webpage. Each image is forwarded through the URL (URL) it comes with, which is great for not occupying website space. However, at the same time, the problem arises: what if the source URL no longer exists? I quickly remembered the forum space we had just closed. All the pages in our m-save folder were copied from the forum. Now that the forum has stopped, what will happen? I opened the pages in this m-save folder and found that their images are all empty
In order to solve this problem, I have decided to transfer the images from these two forums (in Chinese and English). Although they have been deposited for 6 years and have thousands of images, occupying approximately 200M of space, it is still worth the cost. Fortunately, the transfer went smoothly. After uploading via FTP, the batch conversion function of the DW software was used to convert the original links of 890 images in this folder into new ones. The problem was finally successfully resolved.

The second issue is screen scaling: the current computer screen width is generally above 60 centimeters, with a 30 inch LCD reaching 70 centimeters. The width of mobile phone screens is generally only 7.5 centimeters and the length is approximately 16-17 centimeters. If viewed vertically, the proportion of a webpage is only 1/8, and even if viewed horizontally, it is only 1/4. This difference is still significant. Although mobile websites have adaptive features, they are difficult to adjust when encountering special situations such as too many images, too large, or too many table columns. In many cases, computer web pages are allowed, but when copied intact, mobile web pages cannot bear it, and the mobile screen will become chaotic. For example, if the width of a single image exceeds 700 pixels, or if too many images (3 or more) are placed in the same row of the same table, it will not be adaptive and exceed the border on mobile web pages. In addition, if there are too many table columns (over 8 rows) used on a computer webpage, and the filled text in the table is compressed to at most one line per word on the phone, the width of the webpage will definitely exceed the width of the screen and cannot be browsed properly. Therefore, after completing the copying and pasting of the source webpage, it is necessary to carefully and comprehensively inspect it. If the above issues are found, manual modifications must be made (such as reducing image size, changing tables with multiple rows and columns to multiple rows and fewer columns, etc.) to ensure normal browsing of mobile web pages

The third issue is that the first and last sections of the webpage must be in the same box as the middle content section. If these three parts are not within the same frame (or table), there will be a problem of different widths of the three parts on the phone, which affects browsing. A more convenient method of operation is to first insert a multi row (can be 3-5 rows) full width (or 95-100%) table into the DW page, first place the header and footer sections in the first and last rows, and then place the copied and pasted content in the middle row

The fourth issue is the format of music (which exists in both computer and mobile versions, with the mobile version being more prominent): At the beginning of this century, the WMA format became popular, with its biggest feature being its smallest size. About two-thirds of MP3. At that time, our website space was very small, usually around 1-2GB, and some only had 500MB. This space can only hold up to a few hundred pieces of music. For websites like ours that have lasted for 20 years and accumulated tens of thousands of music, WMA format is certainly the best choice. After entering the 2020s, the space of websites increased, and MP3 format gradually gained the upper hand. Especially for mobile websites, the default automatic playback format is usually MP3. The WMA format is gradually fading, and many situations do not have the WMA automatic playback function. It needs to be downloaded first and then played, which is indeed not as convenient as MP3 for mobile phone users. The author had already intended to change the format, but it was shelved due to the heavy workload. This revision has finally made up its mind to do this, spending half a month changing all existing WMA formats to MP3. Taking advantage of this opportunity, the author also thoroughly checked the all music and the results are shown in the list below

Creation year Content Number of Music Space occupied
2003-2010 Files uploaded by webfriends 4020 3.1G
2006-2010 1st Edition Music Overview 3595 2.0G
2011-2015 2nd Edition Music Overview 3386 3.6G
2020-2023 Handbook 2-3 volumes and rare volume for listening 1233 1.2G
2006-2009 Other 270 1.1G
  Total 12504 11.0G
I was also a bit surprised to see such a number - "12504" piece of music. After 20 years of building the website, my main focus has been on music and movies. Looking back at the ups and downs of building the website, my concept of uploading music is around 6000-8000 songs, which is roughly consistent with the total number of original music movies created by Morricone (447, see the bottom statistical table of the filmography). I really didn't expect to accumulate 12000 songs over the past 20 years. Every music, from downloading, storing, managing, editing, uploading, checking Both carry a massive amount of effort and labor from netizens and myself. And they occupy 11GB of space. If it weren't for the unlimited space I use, then this storage cost would have been urgent. There must be a portion of the music here that is repetitive, but it takes a lot of effort and time to find and re edit it. Fortunately, it's not a big deal at the moment, so we'll have to put it on hold first.

On the basis of solving the above four problems, this new copy paste method was used. It took about two months before and after, and a new mobile version website with 19 sections was finally born, including important content of the computer version website. At the same time, I have decided to keep all the web pages of the original two computer versions (the old version and the second version) and form a tripartite structure with the mobile version for visitors to freely choose from. The purpose of doing this is twofold: 1. According to website statistics, our website receives approximately half of the traffic from mobile phones and half from computers. In many cases, the large capacity advantage of computer screens cannot be replaced by mobile phones. 2. History is precious. These web pages faithfully record the editing team, numerous enthusiastic netizens both domestically and internationally, and the historical process of building my own website over the past 20 years: The hardships of entrepreneurship, the fatigue of hard work, the difficulty of self-learning, the troubles of malfunctions, the warmth of netizens, numerous support, life thinking, and the joy of success Everything and so on are faithfully recorded on these websites. The students in their twenties back then have now become parents and become the backbone of society, shouldering the heavy burden of family and society; Young friends in their thirties and forties have now entered the age of “Known fate”, becoming more rational and mature Everyone's feelings towards Morricone's works have a similar process, From the initial surprise. From the initial surprise. from the passion of pursuit to the persistence of deep love, all these true feelings are worth cherishing and savoring. Looking back now at the numerous posts in the 2004 "Morricone Club", the longing and passion that still deeply moved us are the endless motivation to continue moving forward. Therefore, I have decided to permanently save these three versions of the webpage as a website archive and a memorial for enthusiasts, providing long-term service for fans of all ages.

Below, let me briefly summarize the content and changes of the three versions::

From the table above, it can be seen that our website has undergone a long and arduous exploration and development process: Filmography, Music, films, Resources, Research, and Activities, which are six major sections that run through the entire process, gradually refined and improved, and they are basically successful. Over the past 20 years, our pursuit of Maestro can also be divided into three stages: 1. The old version stage (PC First Edition, 2003-2010). This stage is a starting stage, and our understanding of Morricone mostly starts from a passionate memory, gradually opening up our horizons, and then goes on to a similar frenzied pursuit of Morricone. Study all of his works, from music, movies, concerts, singers, performers, critics Collect all music and film resources from various perspectives, exchange understanding and evaluation of this Maestro. Confirming and consolidating the significance and value of this Maestro's pursuit through interactions among fans from around the world. This has laid a reliable foundation for everyone to follow this music master for a long time and spread his excellent works, 2. 2nd edition (PC version 2010-2023). This is a stage of consolidation and maturity. After long-term and unremitting efforts, constantly overcoming various difficulties from both subjective and objective perspectives, our website has finally developed a reliable filmography with 71 year spanning timeline of Morricone's works. We have collected the vast majority of audio and video resources, researched and analyzed a considerable portion of his works, edited and published our own books on Morricone's theme, deepened our friendships and interactions with senior fans both domestically and internationally, established a membership based operation mode, and laid a solid foundation for long-term stable and sustain. 3 . 3rd version (Mobile version 2023-). Taking the mobile version as the main body, retaining the main content of the old and PC versions, entering a mature and rational development stage in a situation of tripartite confrontat. On the basis of 20 years of experience, adapting to the situation of the death of the master and the continuous improvement of the overall level of fans, we have shifted to a stable development stage mainly focused on analyzing and researching the master's audio-visual works. A new section called "Commentary on EM's Works" is about to begin construction, publishing relevant articles from critics and enthusiasts around the world, increasing knowledge, expanding horizons, and continuing to sincerely serve global fans.

The efforts in the interactive section (see the pink area in the table) have been exceptionally difficult and unsuccessful. Although I always pay attention to this section and hope to hear the feelings, opinions, and suggestions of fans in a timely manner. But after 20 years of practice, I feel that as a personal public welfare website, there are many difficulties in this aspect: firstly, it comes from technology. These sections, unlike globally mature web pages in WEB format, require specific interactive programs. After years of practice, I feel that finding a good program is not easy. Whether they are free or paid, most of them do not come from professional fields or have not undergone long-term practice, and the program itself often has many problems. Most of them rely on the support of internet open source programs. Once these shared programs are updated or changed, the problems they bring are often difficult for the authors of these interactive programs to solve. especially in the current social environment, it is difficult to obtain long-term service after purchasing a program. This innate deficiency greatly hinders the long-term normal operation of these programs, which is also an important reason for us to close our forum; The second is hacker attacks. Small websites like ours, generally speaking, are not the preferred targets for hackers to attack, but they often suffer from collateral damage. In 2005 and 2007, our website has encountered two consecutive incidents, especially for the second time. The damage and impact on the website were significant, and I have written a special article (see here) to document this incident. The conclusion is that personal websites should minimize the use of interactive programs to reduce vulnerabilities; The third issue is network regulation. Recently, our main domain was intercepted by Tencent Security Center on WeChat, which lasted for more than a year. After 8 complaints, we had to make up our minds to completely close the forum to solve the problem (see here). The lesson is profound. This incident has brought me long-term troubles and helplessness. Ideal is very fulfilling, reality is very skinny. We have to face reality and accept the lesson. Fortunately, there are two channels for communication: email and WeChat. Welcome everyone to use and communicate with me

Alright, let's put an end to this. After 15 years of ups and downs, our mobile website and three carriages have finally taken shape. As far as I know, we and CHIMAI in Belgium are the only surviving 2 Morricone themed websites in the world at present. Since last year. CHIMAI seems to have entered a hosting mode, forming a document based website, and its autonomous activity ability may be limited. I hope that our website can continue to survive and develop according to the existing model. Preserve a piece of hot soil for Morricone fans worldwide, continue to widely disseminate the outstanding works of masters, and contribute our efforts to the high-quality development of society and the construction of spiritual civilization.
