user comments:--------Bremenskiye
Muzykanty is an excellent children's/family animation
story. The characters are universal and endearing, instilling
a sense of diversity (a young man, a rooster, a cat, a
dog and an ass) and cooperation. The story is universal,
playing on a theme of its time: Freedom from rule by authority;
And existentialism.
Artistically drawn. Set in
Victorian Europe (Bremen is in Germany).

user comments:--------Platon
Gromov, a pianist, is travelling by train to a distant
town of Griboedov to visit his father. He gets off to
have lunch during a twenty minute stop at Zastupinsk railway
station. He meets Vera, a waitress, after he refuses to
pay her for the disgusting food he doesn't even touch
and misses his train due to police investigation of the
incident. His passport is then accidentally taken away
from him by Andrei, Vera's fiance, and his money is stolen
as he waits for the next train to Griboedov. Vera learns
that Platon is about to get sentenced and sent to prison
in the Far East for a car accident he isn't guilty for.
During the few days that Platon has to spend in Zastupinsk
he and Vera develop feelings for each other...

comments:--------Andrey Pavlovich Buzykin, who
makes a living by teaching at an institute and translating
English literature, is cheating on his wife. Buzykin's
main problem is that he's a kind man with a weak character.
The lies he is telling his wife all the time are inconvincing,
but he never has the courage to tell her the truth. His
lover, Alla, is aware of his family life, but gets offended
when, for example, he cannot meet her so that he doesn't
come home late, or when he doesn't want to go home in
a new jacket she gives him to avoid having to explain
to his wife. Alla and Nina, Andrei's wife, both leave
him, forgive him, and return to him at the same time,
and Andrei continues with this kind of life, full of suffering
and deceit. Finally, both women are so fed up with his
lies that they don't believe him even when he is telling
the truth...

user comments:--------This
film takes place in the 19th century countryside in Russia.
It's a sort of a suspense story, but more of a tragedy
with a beautiful poor country girl and three men who take
interest in her.
It's a very nice adaptation of Chekov's
story. It's strongly atmospheric and needs concentration
to be fully appreciated. If you like a lot of action
you'll probably get bored.
Acting is good and cinematography is
beautiful, and even if the past is captured very realistically
there's also almost a magical feeling to the whole movie

comments:--------If you're expecting something "classical",
"a la Disney" don't watch this TV series. It's
a really mad version of well known Poppins saga. Everything
is happening somewhere in early 80's (very good design by
the way) in a idyllic suburbia filled with really abnormal
people. And Poppins is landing and making everything even
more crazy! She's able too screen hallucinations, "make
dreams come true" etc. The movie is filled with pop
songs, dance numbers etc. Actually this kind of "children
movies" were quite typical in SU in 80's. Surreal,
crazy, filled with pop songs. |

comments:--------When you visit museum of Sherlock
Holmes in London, Baker St., first thing that you see on
the second floor is a number of pictures of all actors who
ever played Holmes in the movies, and in the middle of that
compilation you can see the biggest photo - the photo of
Vasiliy Livanov.
All world cinematographers (including
British ones) have admitted that Vasiliy Livanov is the
best Sherlock Holmes that ever appeared on screen. And
it is true. There were made several movies about the adventures
of Sherlock Holmes and Dr.Watson for Russian TV in the
late 70-ies and early 80-ies, including such films as
The Meeting, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Bloody Script
and many more (about 10 total number). Livanov as Sherlock,
Vitaliy Solomin as Watson, Rina Zelenaya as Mrs.Hudson,
Borislav Brondukov as Inspector Lestrade all make these
series directed by Igor Maslennikov an all-time masterpiece.
Almost all of actors started their careers in theaters
(Livanov, Solomin and Zelenaya continued giving performances
even after their success on the big screen) which gave
films amazing atmosphere of reality. The images of old
London were carefully reconstructed in Baltic cities almost
untouched by time which gave movies a lot of similarities
with real XIX century London. All movies (it wouldn't
be right to call them episodes) are set on very high level,
and from the opening unforgettable music score they charm
every viewer. It's
|
|
very hard to distinguish
the best film of the series, every of them has something
unique. The Hound of the Baskervilles for example has the
greatest number of participating celebrities, including
Nikita Mikhalkov (internationally known for directing and
playing in such movies like An Unfinished Piece for Mechanical
Piano, The Barber of Siberia, Oscar-winning Burnt by the
Sun etc.), Oleg Yankovskiy (Nostalgia by Tarkovskiy), Evgeniy
Steblov and many more. |

user comments:--------This
movie performed a miracle - it captured a mood, an atmosphere
so raw, full, that you are feeling the stuffy summer air,
the slow dusty wind, candy-sweet smell of southern flowers
in a hot small Krimean town. The fact that the revolution
is coming closer makes it eary and subtly frightening,
as if you know that there`s a needle in someone`s bouquet
of camelias.
The acting is done in a way
that you can`t believe it is not documentary, but film
frames are like a picture frames, they airy and weightlessly
capture fading scenes of decadent beauty. Then the violence
comes and awakens the characters, they are silly, comical
and immensely tragic at the same time. But even the shootings
and some real documental footage don`t brake the atmosphiere,
it only changes, darkens, like before the storm. All of
it is symbolically captured in a scene in the garden,
when the operator is trying to tell Olga that the old
life is stale, unjust, senseless, the rush of wind runs
over the park growing in strength along with the monologue.
But she does not understand him, she thinks he`s just
jealous and laughs in ignorance of the storms to come

user comments:--------One
of the best Nikita Mikhalkov's pictures. A gripping, rather
confusing adventurous plot, fragmentary editing, mysterious
look of heroes - all this became a fresh breeze in the
soviet cinematography of the 70th. The excellent crew
including a big number of greatest russian actors in the
beginning of their career. Beautiful and piercing main
theme by Edward Artemyev thinly transfers the mood of
the movie combining the romanticism of the 70th and the
dramatic line of the picture. In 1974 the movie was sworn
by critics. But years went by. And now it's considered
to be the cult one.

user comments:--------"Burnt
by the Sun" glides effortlessly, seamlessly though
the genres as it tells of a handful of Russian characters
who collectively constitute a family of sorts with great
humor and drama, poignant and sweetly sentimental moments,
and excellence both technically and artistically. What
is more, the film's story is interesting, unpredictable,
and well told with depth and thoroughly developed characters.
The much which has been
written about the politics of the our time, the Oscar
award and the bravura with which it was accepted, etc.
is much ado about nothing. This is a movie. This is
art and entertainment. And, when taken for what it is,
"Burnt by the Sun" is truly a masterpiece.

comments:--------"The Driver for Vera"
is simply excellent cinematography. The pace and intensity
of this two-hour film is such that you don't notice passage
of time. It's like dozing off and waking up from an intense
dream where for a few seconds you don't know who you are
or where you are. If a regular Hollywood production is like
leisurely afternoon tea with some sweets, this film is like
taking shots of espresso every minute for two hours. In
the first few seconds the movie grabs your attention, your
emotions, your very soul, and holds that grip until the
very finale (in my case, it's been about 24 hours since
I watched the film and I am still under the grip). The background
scenery (Moscow and Sevastopol of the early 1960's) is spectacular
and the music is extremely powerful. In the geopolitical
background there is the power struggle between the figures
of the police, the army, and the special services, a struggle
that ensued in the power void after Stalin's death. Career,
ambition, love, sex, power, violence, birth and death are
a devilish mix in the film's shockingly realistic story
line.

Ennio
Ennio Morricone
Morricone。
Ennio
