|
Matteo
Scuro is a retired Sicilian bureaucrat (responsible mainly for the
writing of birth certificates), a widower with five children, all
of whom live on the mainland and hold responsible jobs. He decides
to surprise each with a visit and finds none as he imagined. The
film is a veritable travelogue across contemporary Italy, as Matteo
journeys to Napoli, Roma, Firenze, Milano, and Turino to search
for each of his children; he even spends one night on the streets
among the homeless. Scuro returns to Sicily, visits his wife's grave,
and reports with irony that "stanno tutti bene." |

1944.
Primo Arcovazzi a fanatic member of Brigate Nere (fascist organization)
is in charge to bring an opponent to the regime, Prof. George Wilson,
from Abruzzo to Roma. He accepted the mandate because of his wish
to be upgraded to "Federale". They travel by a sidecar
trough the disastrous Italy, near to the final collapse, under bombings
and in agony. Nevertheless the bad situation, they manage to build
up a kind of friendship. Primo, even if the signals of final destruction
are near, doesn't lose his trust in the regime. The end is near |

Hank
McCain (John Cassavetes) is the imprisoned gangster who gets out
of jail with the help of the mob. The syndicate wants him to take
part in a heist of a Las Vegas casino. The plan is discussed and
soon abandoned by the mob, but Hank decides to go ahead with the
robbery. Disguised as a fireman, he pulls off the daring crime with
the help of his current flame Irene (Britt Ekland). The angry mobsters
want him dead and they soon close in on his old girlfriend Rosemary
(Gena Rowlands) for information that could lead to Hank. She would
rather commit suicide than give them information about her ex-boyfriend
as she obviously still carries a torch for her old flame. Even without
her help, the dragnet closes in on Hank as the mobsters systematically
figure out his whereabouts. This feature was the Italian entry at
the 1969 Cannes Film Festival, a choice that caused controversy
and questions |

Better
known as Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion, this Oscar-winning
political drama stars Gian_Maria_Volonte as the citizen of the title,
an unnamed police inspector. The story finds the inspector calmly
cutting his mistress' throat, then planting evidence that will clear
him of accusation -- and attempting to evade arrest by virtue of
his "clean" public image. Elio_Petri's own anti-establishment
stance was never more pronounced than in this film, where the truth
is whatever the ruling class chooses to acknowledge. The original
Italian title of Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion was
Indagine su un Cittadino al di Sopra di Ogna Sospetto. |

A
pair of working class lovers - a secretary and an accountant, scheme
to marry into the rich landed gentry. Their targets are a professor,

a great lady who lets every man in town climb on top of her but
won't marry because socially they're all beneath her. Vittorio doesn't
get what is going on. Their little brother Camillo, a seventeen
year old seminary student turned Maoist provides the title of the
film when he scrawls 'China is Near' on the walls of the Socialist
Party building, his brother's campaign headquarters |

is a real hard worker. For this reason he is loved by the masters
and hated by his own colleagues. The unions decide agitations against
the masters. Lulù doesn't agree till he cuts, by accident, one of
his own fingers. Now, after he understood the worker's conditions,
he agrees the unions and participates to the strike. He immediately
is fired and, not only is abandoned by his lover, but also by the
other workers. But the fights of the unions allow him under a new
legislation to be hired again. At this point his mind starts giving
collapse signs... |

The
Master and Margaret (1972) is based on the eponymous book by Mikhail
A. Bulgakov. The film is set in the Soviet Union under Stalin, it
has several story-lines, that are intertwined. Maestro Nikolai Masoudov
(Tognazzi), a talented writer, and his assistant Margaret (Farmer),
are working on a biblical story of Pontius Pilate (Tadic). The Satan
- Woland (Cuny), and his lieutenants, are harassing Master by surveillance,
by killing his friend, and sending another friend to Gulag prison
in Siberia. Victimized by their harassment, Master becomes paranoid,
and is locked up in a mental institution. Margaret is trying to
save him regardless of the danger |

The
political prisoner Fulvio Imbriani is released ill from prison and
the authorities expect to find his rebel friends though him. However,
he returns to his family's real state and recovers his health with
his siblings. When his lover Charlotte unexpectedly arrives in the
property, she stays with Fulvio but his sister overhears Charlotte
telling that their friends would be arriving on the next morning
and calls the authorities. The soldiers kill a great number of revolutionaries
but Fulvio escapes with Charlotte that was shot on the back. She
dies and Fulvio travels with his comrades but without enthusiasm.
Sooner he betrays the group, trying to flee to United States with
the money of the revolutionaries and his new lover Francesca. |
