This hard-boiled French crime thriller begins with the bold murder of a well-heeled Frenchman. The detective assigned to the case is most puzzled for there seems to be no motive. Then a old man and an astrologer are killed in exactly the same way, leaving the detective to figure out how the three disparate victims are linked. All he has to go on is a mysterious diary given to him by the step daughter of the first victim. The diary belonged to him and contains a list of the man's lovers. One of those women was once the lover of the detective and he calls upon her. She, not knowing that he is on a case, hopes that he will renew their love. During their tryst, he learns that she knows all three of the victims, but before he can call her on it, she too is gunned down. Eventually it is the lover of the step-daughter who leads the detective to the mystery's surprising, shocking conclusion. Despite the film's noir-ish content, director Philippe Labro chose to film it in gay, sunny Nice, a technique that actually enhances the grimness of the suspenseful story. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Three men are killed in Nice. The only apparent connection between the three men is the manner of their death – they were each shot from a distance by a rifle equipped with a silencer. Whilst investigating the murders, Inspector Carella comes across a notebook belonging to one of the dead men. In it, he finds the telephone number of his former girlfriend, Jocelyne Rocca. Convinced that she may be able to help him, Carella invites Jocelyne to his apartment. The meeting is not as fruitful as Carella had hoped and shortly after leaving him Jocelyne is also shot dead. Carella makes a breakthrough when he learns that all four of the victims appeared in a play together eight years ago. NBC ran a police drama also called 87th Precinct during the 1961–1962 season based on McBain's work. Hunter revealed that he was McBain in 1958, but continued to use the pseudonym for decades, notably for the 87th Precinct series, and the Matthew Hope detective series. He retired the pen names of Cannon, Marsten, Collins, Addams and Taine around 1960. From then on crime novels were generally attributed to McBain, and other sorts of fiction to Hunter. Reprints of crime-oriented stories and novels written in the 1950s previously attributed to other pseudonyms were re-issued under the McBain byline. Evan Hunter was born in 1926 in East Harlem, New York on October 15, 1926. During World War II, he joined the Navy and served aboard a destroyer in the Pacific. He graduated from Hunter College, were he majored in English and psychology, with minors in dramatics and education. He was a prolific writer who also wrote under the names of Ed McBain, Curt Cannon, Hunt Collins, Ezra Hannon, and Richard Marsten. His first major success came in 1954 with the publication of The Blackboard Jungle, which was later adapted as a film. He published the first three books in the 87th Precinct series in 1956 under the name of Ed McBain. He also wrote juvenile books, plays, television scripts, and stories and articles for magazines. He won the Mystery Writers of America Award in 1957 and the Grand Master Award in 1986 for lifetime achievement. He died of laryngeal cancer on July 6, 2005 at the age of 78.

Philippe Labro, is a French author, journalist and film director, born in Montauban (close to the Massif Central and the Pyrenees) on 27 August 1936. He has worked for RTL, Paris Match, TF1 and Antenne 2. He is a laureate of the Prix Interallié, a French literary distinction founded in 1930, which was awarded for “L'étudiant étranger” in 1986.
At eighteen years, he left to study at Washington and Lee University in Virginia. He then traveled across all of the United States. On his return to Europe, he became a reporter. From 1960 to 1962 during the Algerian war, Labro was a member of the military. He returned to his journalistic activities following his time in the military. He has written and directed many films, and was a close friend of Jean-Pierre Melville, as he recalls in the 2008 documentary Code Name Melville. From 1985 to 2000, he directed the programs on RTL becoming the vice president of the station in 1992.In April 2010, he became Commander of the Légion d'honneur.
