Biography for Pier Paolo Pasolini

Pier Paolo Pasolini achieved fame and notoriety long before he entered the film industry - a published poet at 19, he had already written numerous novels and essays before his first screenplay in 1954. His first film Accattone (1961) was based on his own novel, and its violent depiction of the life of a pimp in the slums of Rome caused a sensation. He was arrested in 1962 when his contribution to the portmanteau film Ro.Go.Pa.G. (1963) was considered blasphemous, and given a suspended sentence. It might have been expected that his next film, Vangelo secondo Matteo, Il (1964) (The Gospel According to St.Matthew), which presented the Biblical story in a totally realistic, stripped-down style, would cause a similar fuss, but in fact it was rapturously acclaimed as one of the few honest portrayals of Christ on screen (its original Italian title pointedly omitted the Saint in St. Matthew). Pasolini's film career would then alternate distinctly personal (and often scandalously erotic adaptations of classic literary texts) Edipo re (1967/I) (Oedipus Rex), Decameron, Il (1971), Racconti di Canterbury, I (1972) (The Canterbury Tales), Fiore delle mille e una notte, Il (1974) (Arabian Nights) with his own more personal projects, expressing his controversial views on Marxism, atheism, fascism and homosexuality, notably Teorema (1968) (Theorem), Pigsty and the notorious Sal?? o le 120 giornate di Sodoma (1976) (Salo, or The 120 Days of Sodom), a relentlessly grim fusion of Mussolini's Fascist Italy with the Marquis de Sade which was banned in Italy (and many other countries) for several years. Pasolini was murdered in still-mysterious circumstances shortly after completing the film.

Synopsis

A brief and Review
Review-1: Pasolini wrote, directed and stars in this richly textured epic based on eight tales by 14th-century Italian writer Giovanni Boccaccio. Pasolini weaves the stories together into a bawdy tapestry of a medieval Italy populated by artists, priests and magicians. Appearing in the role of the great pre-Renaissance painter Giotto, Pasolini guides the viewer through a cinematic landscape ripe with sensuality and irreverent humor.. First in Pasolini's "Trilogy of Life," which also includes THE ARABIAN NIGHTS and THE CANTERBURY TALES. Originally rated X by the Motion Picture Association of America.(More)

A brief and Review
ARABIAN NIGHTS (Il Fiore delle mille e una notte) is a movie written and directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini in 1974. This picture won the Grand Prize of the jury of the 1974 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the Golden Palm.

Nur Er Din has just bought a beautiful young slave, Zumurrud, with whom he's fallen madly in love. On the next day, Zumurrud is kidnapped by a wealthy merchant. She manages to escape and, after having crossed the desert, is enthroned King of a city whose king has just died without leaving any children to succeed him.

Nur Er Din will spend the following months searching for Zumurrud. He will make the acquaintance of several characters who'll tell him their personal story. These stories are erotic tales from the Arab folklore dealing with homosexuality, voyeurism and all the pleasures sex can give.

Arabian Nights
Steve Barron Hallmark/Artisan 07/00 VHS Not Rated

In this phantasmagoric tale filled with dragons, thieves, genies, flying carpets, and practical jokes, Scheherezade (Mili Avital) marries the mad Sultan of Baghdad (Dougray Scott) who, having been betrayed by his first wife, is convinced all women are out to get him ?? unless he kills them first. He decides to marry and have each bride strangled the next morning. But having been tutored by a master storyteller (Alan Bates) in the marketplace, Scheherezade foils his plan by starting a bewitching new tale each evening so that he will spare her again and again to hear the endings.

This beautiful and clever daughter of the Sultan's vizier (Jim Carter) proves to be a very imaginative storyteller. Two of the most familiar are Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves and Aladdin and the Lamp. The moral of each tale is aimed at transforming the Sultan's heart, and sure enough there is a happy ending for the couple. Near the end, his villainous brother (James Frain) arrives outside Bagdad with an army. However, the Sultan has learned his lessons well and is able to creatively draw upon elements of all the stories in his conquest of the invading army.

Screenplay writer Peter Barnes has a marvelous time playing with the different genres of comedy, tragedy, magic, and romantic drama. The computer wizardry is dazzling, and the exotic sets, costumes, and music are all top drawer. Hats off to director Steve Barron for this spectacular 175-minute production! (More)
