About Jing

Our friend, Rodison C. Leonardo, was born in the Philippines, a native Filipino. You can also call him by his nickname Jing. He's 34 years old, a Roman Catholic. He holds a degree of Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Communication Engineering. There was once an occurrence in his life he wanted to enter Priesthood after his graduation in college. For some personal reasons, he didn't continue to pursue it. Until now it's very hard to admit that he's still a bachelor at his mature age. He only diverts his time to watch film or hear music after his work. He loves film and music. His real hobbies are to collect music in LPs and CDs, and also to collect films in VHS, VCD and DVD as well. He started to like Sir Ennio Morricone's music when he saw the film "The Mission" in 1995. He considered The Mission music 'very influential' to him. Seeking more of Sir Ennio's works, he joined in one of Morricone's prestige forums. There he met many friends in different nations who really loved to help those who were beginners of knowing Sir Ennio and his magnificent scores. He still makes contact to some of them through e-mail. Knowing friends who have one common goal, "to spread the music of Sir Ennio Morricone", is a very remarkable and tremendous experience for him. It's so great to know there's someone in the Philippines who really appreciate Maestro Ennio Morricone, truly the legend of film music.

Many happy to Jing and his big family

Il Prefetto di Ferro(1977)-- Il Mostro(1977)
This is not a movie depicting the new Italian kingdom in the 19th century , it`s an absolutely true story about the struggle against the Sicilian Mafia. In 1925 Mussolini, who came to power 3 years ago, sent Cesare Mori/1872-1942/ to Sicily, as a police prefect, with the task of whiping the Mafia out.The Fascist regime was concerned about its power and influence, so the following 4 years entered the history as the time of the "Iron Prefect", who arrested and convicted over 2 000 mafiosi. His brave struggle ended in 1929, when he was dismissed and appointed senator in Rome, mainly because he attacked high-ranking Fascist officials, who were deeply involved with the Mafia. They proved to be too powerful to struggle against and Mori lost the war after winning so many battles /including the conviction of don Vito Cascio Ferro, the first known Capo di tutti Cappi/(See here)

This little gem has been overlooked and underrated by film buffs, and I think it is time to bring some credit to it. Maybe the reason was the mixed nature of the movie itself, somewhere between giallo and Italian social satires of Italian contemporary society. I guess giallo fans were disappointed of the general treatment Zampa made of the genre rules (he put in a mysterious psycho killer using a hammer and leaving strange footnotes, but there were no gruesome killings graphically shown), while on the other side, intellectual audiences ignored the very interesting social comment in the film and decided it was just another giallo junk. As a result, nobody seems to care nowadays about this one. But it has a great deal to offer for sensitive audiences. Johnny Dorelli brings in a warm and complex character with who we can easily sympathize, and this gives to the end a terrible turn and a smell of despair about human nature that makes you think about for a long time. You will be astonished to discover why the killer was committing crimes. Not only this makes for a strong sense of menace through the entire film, but it also delivers a very well crafted story which shows the deep real motivations a psycho killer may have (and this is rare for a giallo). It is also interesting to notice than the social comment included in the screenplay (back in the 70s) is still up to the 2005, which is much more that can be said about many Italian films of that period. Add to this a marvelous Ennio Morricone soundtrack and a guest starring appearance by gorgeous starlet Sydne Rome. Give it a try! (See here)

La Resa Dei Conti (1966)

La Resa Dei Conti (1966)

This is absolutely one of the best so-called spaghetti westerns ever, after Sergio Leone's films of course, and it rates very highly among all westerns. Unlike many other non-Sergio Leone westerns, the cinematography, camera-work, etc., are all very good and some scenes are very artistic and even worthy of Leone himself.

Lee van Cleef is excellent as the pseudo-lawman/bounty hunter with integrity who believes in "justice" and "progress" for society.

Ennio Morricone, as usual, provides a great score for the film. The song is rousing, while the music for the chase scenes is excellent. Morricone also does a folk-music/square dance version of the theme for the wedding party, which is a neat touch.

The story is interesting and well-developed, as well. In its full-length version, it is in fact somewhat deep, with van Cleef's Corbett being a fairly complex character who undergoes a significant character development in the course of the film. In the abridged American version, unfortunately, he is shown as simply bounty hunter who mercilessly kills all before him in cold blood, who never bats an eye at his job, making his character two-dimensional and making the end more flat, more perfunctory, and less convincing or meaningful. In the full-length version, though, he cares about justice, gives outlaws a choice (and a chance), and there is significant development on how he becomes so obsessed with finding Cuchillo that he crosses the boundary between justice and personal obsession. He then re-examines himself and the events in which he finds himself to come to a significant realisation near the end. (See here)

Le Ruffian (1983)
This film describes the adventure of a group of friends who want to recover crates full of gold from a fall in Canada. I had a fond memory of it, which somehow faded with a recent viewing.

Lino Ventura is still good, but lame at times. Landscapes are fabulous and the music by Vladimir Cosma is still good in the main theme, although unfortunately pasted more or less continuously, which was not the smartest move.

Other characters and actors are not reaching that high, including Claudia Cardinale and Giraudeau (possibly the best one in the cast there).

A good portrait of the Canadian Wild West today, it remains a decent rental or discount buy if you're fond of Lino Ventura.(See here)

Plot Summary for OK Connery (1967)
The evil crime syndicate Thanatos is bent on taking over the world, using a magnetic wave generator that will cause all metal-based machinery to grind to a halt. However, the well-known British secret agent normally assigned to such tasks isn't available, so they engage his civilian brother, Neil, to help. Neil, played by Neil Connery, is a world-class plastic surgeon, hypnotist, and lip-reader, which turn out to be precisely the skills required for thwarting Thanatos. (See here)

Honorary Oscar 2006 goes to composer Ennio Morricone

congratulations Morricone most heartily

Ennio Morricone Mini biography: A classmate of director Sergio Leone with whom he would form one of the great director/composer partnerships (right up there with Eisenstein & Prokofiev, Hitchcock & Herrmann, Fellini & Rota), Ennio Morricone studied at Rome's Santa Cecilia Conservatory, where he specialised in trumpet. His first film scores were relatively undistinguished, but he was hired by Leone for Per un pugno di dollari (1964) on the strength of some of his song arrangements. His score for that film, with its sparse arrangements, unorthodox instrumentation (bells, electric guitars, harmonicas, the distinctive twang of the jew's harp) and memorable tunes, revolutionised the way music would be used in Westerns, and it is hard to think of a post-Morricone Western score that doesn't in some way reflect his influence. Although his name will always be synonymous with the spaghetti Western, Morricone has also contributed to a huge range of other film genres: comedies, dramas, thrillers, horror films, romances, art movies, exploitation movies -making him one of the film world's most versatile artists. He has written nearly 400 film scores, so a brief summary is impossible, but his most memorable work includes the Leone films, Gillo Pontecorvos _Battaglia di Algeri, La (1965)_ , Roland Joffé's The Mission (1986), Brian De Palma's The Untouchables (1987) and Giuseppe Tornatore's Nuovo cinema Paradiso (1988), plus a rare example of sung opening credits for Pier Paolo Pasolini's Uccellacci e uccellini (1966). It must be stressed that he is *not* behind the work of the entirely separate composers Bruno Nicolai and Nicola Piovani despite allegations made by more than one supposedly reputable film guide!
