Groom Lake - Epiphone Sheraton, Gretch Hawaiian
Groom has played guitar since 1963.In college he wrote songs for his DKE fraternity brothers the Lemon Pipers that appeared on their "Green Tambourine" album that went gold in 1967.He covered the British blues craze in London for Rolling Stone in 1968,becoming a contributing editor the folowing year.His RS work is anthologized in "Rolling Stone- The Greatest Stories- 25 Years of Journalism on the Edge"(New York,Doubleday,1992)and in "The Rolling Stone Book of The Beats"(New York,Hyperion 1999).After leaving Rolling Stone he lived in Heidelberg,Paris and in Buenos Aires,writing columns on political and affairs for newspapers and magazines including The Boston Globe,The Chicago Tribune,The New York Times and USA Today. He has lectured at the University of Virginia and at the Indiana University School of Journalism. In 1995 he was writer-in-residence at the University of New Mexico and was diagnosed with colon cancer. After a year of chemotherapy he morphed into Groom Lake and started making music,which along with laughter, helped him beat some very long odds. His musical influences include Ray Charles,John Hammond,Bobby Bland,Howard Tate,Toots Hibbert,arrangers Burt Burns and Jerry Ragovoy,Tom Lehrer,Country Joe,Rick Danko,and Dr. John, among others. |
